<title>Career Camp 2008</title>

<description>This summer, the Frederick County Career &amp; Technology Center will hold its 16th annual Career Camp. This half-day summer experience will provide students with the opportunity to explore two appealing career choices. The classes are designed to challenge and expose students to real-world challenges, as well as to provide them with exposure to both skilled and professional careers so that they can make informed decisions regarding their future careers and educational choices.

This year’s camp will be available to all current 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.
Students will attend two classes/programs each day of camp. A mid-morning snack and beverage will be served between classes. 
Camp will be held:   Monday, June 23 – Friday, June 27

<title>Two Summer Centers for Chinese Studies!</title>

<description>Students in two different age groups will now have the opportunity to participate in a center for Chinese studies this summer, as follows:  

 FCPS will have its own Center for Chinese Studies for students entering grades 6-8, with no tuition. The center will be held from July 14 - August 1, 8:30 am - 3:00 pm at TJ Middle School.     
 
The Center for Chinese Studies sponsored by the Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented Students that previously was scheduled to be held in Frederick County will now be held at Meade Middle School in Anne Arundel County from July 7-18 for students entering grades 4-6.

<title>Maryland Summer Centers</title>

<description>The Maryland State Department of Education recently announced the schedule of upcoming Maryland Summer Centers for students entering Grades 4 through 12.  Summer Center programs offer unique instructional experiences for gifted and talented students, and gives them the opportunity to work in settings and with resources not available during the regular school year.

The centers, located across the state of Maryland, are open to students entering grades 4-12 and offer learning opportunities in Chinese, creative writing, engineering, fine and performing arts, history, law and government, mathematics, science, technology and video, television and film production.  Some of the centers are residential and some are non-residential.    Please note that the non-residential center for Chinese Studies will be held for students entering grades 5-7 at Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School, weekdays from July 14 through July 25.  

The deadline to apply for most Maryland Summer Centers is April 15, 2007.  Fine arts centers may have earlier deadlines to allow time for auditions.  To access information about the summer centers and to apply online, go to www.marylandpublicschools.org/summercenters.

<description>Mrs. Rudy will be going into 8th grade Language Arts classes from January 8th through January 17th to complete The Harrington-O’Shea (a career decision making system) and a high school 4 year plan with all 8th grade students.

January 30th, 2008—TJHS counselors will meet with 8th grade students to hand out 9th grade registration information.  This day is for students only.  Information and directions will come home that day with the students.  (Snow date Feb. 1)

February 7th, 2008—TJHS is hosting an Academic Planning Night for 8th graders and their parents/guardians from 6:30pm until 8:30pm for all 8th graders planning to attend TJHS as 9th graders in the Fall of 2008.  Snow date is scheduled for February 11th.

February 27th, 2008—TJMS is hosting a parent information night for incoming 6th graders beginning at 6:30pm at TJMS.

<description>In an effort to improve communication between school and home, the PTSA has been working with TJMS staff to create an email distribution list so we can send out a weekly TJMS/PTSA bulletin via email . The bulletin will be sent out every Thursday, beginning Jan 10, and will include a calendar of events for the upcoming week, plus information from TJMS administrators and the PTSA.

A test email will be sent out this week to verify the email addresses that we have on hand.  If your email has changed from adelphia to comcast, please make sure you update it with the school.  You can add or change your email by clicking on the &quot;E-Newsletter (subscribe)&quot; link in the left-hand column of the webpage.

A representative from Study Island will present an overview of this proposed new computer-based curriculum support program that will benefit students both in school and at home.
